I've been popping up the wind screen on the windshield with the sun roof open and also with the top down. Then I read that the windshield wind screen is for sun roof operation only.

So today I was out and about with the top down and did a test. With all the windows up and the top down, it seemed a tad noisier with the windshield wind screen "up." So, now I plan to deploy it only with sun roof operation.

Anyone else have a take on this?

My understanding is that the pop up wind deflector should be deployed when the sun roof is open. I found that it has no positive function when the roof is down at all and it just make more noise.

Yes, the windscreen is to be used primarily with the sun roof. The main purpose is to break up the air stream into small rivulets such that it dampens the pressurization of the cabin as high speed air travels across the open sun roof. As high speed air travels over an open cavity, it creates a vacuum within that cavity (called a venturi) - this vacuum then sucks air back into the car (similar to a very large woofer speaker. The net effect is to reduce or eliminate the "whoomping" sound you get with a sun roof.

I use the windscreen when I have the sunroof open and when the top is down when it is cool out. It helps break the wind that would ordinarily hit the top of my head. I really don't find the extra noise objectionable especially if I turn the stereo up.

A good tip when using the sunroof and windscreen is to open the rear windows a little it stops a lot of the noise. This tip was posted here about a year ago and really works well.

Hi,
Hey that is a nice one!!!! I'll try it when the rain that just started a minute ago stops!
btw, I use the windscreen with sunroof open to reduce the "depression" noise and I also use the windscreen when driving roof-down because otherwise my hair keeps flying around :p

I've only ever used it with the sunroof after trying it once with the top down, which made it both noisier and draughtier...
