Hello All.
Well had my 2008 EOS for almost 4 months from new! Love my baby, but am wondering about the build quality and what to do. While coming home on the freeway after work, a smaal rock hit the windshield and now I have a chip/crack the size of a dime! I have had rocks hit the windshield on my old bmw 525i, with no I'll effects.
Can the windshield be repaired?
Should it be replaced?
Anyone else have this happen, and how did you solve it?
I am afraid if they mess with the windshield seals to replace, then I might have other problems such as leaks, squeeks, etc.
Please let me know.
Thanks,
Robert:(

So does the glass/perspex covering the speed dials etc! Having spent 3 hours yesterday lovingly cleaning the inside of my Eos, my husband today noticed lots of scratches on there. Was not a happy bunny! Ive no idea how it happened but hubby reckons "its crap quality".

Yes the windsield glass nicks easily. It also does not like the fine grit particles in the air when driving at highway speeds, As for your dash panel gauge covers, it is a very soft plastic and you either have to blow the dirt off with compressed air or go over it very gently with a dampened micro fiber cloth. Most cars use this stuff anymore unfortuneately.

This is a common problem but easy to fix at minimal cost. Meguiars sell scratch remover products for clear plastics - should be available from good auto parts specialists and certainly from marine suppliers which is where I first came across them:

I used a 3M product when I had a boat [Bring Out Another Thousand in the currency of your choice:( ] however this is not listed when I checked for this post - I suspect it may be the product now being marketed by Meguiars.

Thanks for the feedback

Hi All,
Nice to know I'm not alone! How does the repair look? Does it come back to clear, or does it leave a noticable spot on the windshield forever? It really bugs me because it is right in the line of sight.
Called VW here in Hawaii, and they quoted $470 us just for the windshield, not including labor! The car is less than 4 months old! Then they said because it was a repair, they would only warrantee their work for 12 months, or 12 thousand miles!
Not happy. Some please let me know how the repair looks before I start dumping more money into this car.
Thanks,
Robert:confused:

I had two repairs done on the windscreen of my mini (before EOS) and you would never have known they had been done - great job.
Just had a new windscreen put in the EOS and luckily the guy who did it had already had feedback from one of his mates that the EOS was a tight fit to remove and replace - he made a fantastic job of the replacement tho and you would never know that it had been done apart from the fact that it no longer has VW etched on the glass.

Chip Repair

Hi All,
After reading everyones input, I think I'm going to try the windshield repair first. It scares me to have them break the original seals, If the break the seals, then it will void the manufactures original warrantee.
If it looks bad, at least it will stop the chip from spreading. Let me know what you think, and wish me luck.
Great day!

Do you have insurance? I have $100 deductible which I've used a few times now for a replacement windshield. Even if you have the more standard $200 deductible, that's your max exposure for a replacement windshield. Take the car to any auto glass repair shop. They probably have a lot more experience replacing auto glass than you VW dealer has.

The flimsy plastic that covers the instrument panel on most cars I've own scratches easily. Since normally while driving, nothing touches this "glass", there is no need for the manufacturers to make it diamond scratch proof. My theory is that these panels pick up scratches from fingernails when hands linger in this region momentarily.

Cure: Keep your fingers out in front of the steering wheel.

Sure Do! $500 deductable. Insurance should cover the whole repair, but will not cover replacment, unless I pay the first $500. Going to do the repair and see how it goes.

Thanks,

Chip Fixed

Aloha All,

Had chip repaired. They came to my place of work and repaired. Booked service on line, Safelite.com, professional, filed all the paperwork, and my insurance company waived the deductable and picked up the whole bill.
So far repair looks like it is holding, and is barely noticeable. Its about a 4cm of slight haze where they used resin to repair. The repair is warranted for as long as you own or lease your car.
Feel better now that my baby has had the repair done. I really dread taking it in for the 5000 mile service, I don't like anyone touching it, and the Dealers mechanics seem to not experienced at all on how this car is put together and how to service. I feel like they will use the car for practice till the get to know the EOS model better. My license plate reads, MY-EOS. People go, what is an EOS? Very rare in Hawaii.

Thanks,
Robert:D

I just took my new 2012 EOS on it's first long trip and discovered what you're talking about. I came back with a small chip in the windshield and a few dots in the glass. My deductible is $500, so I had the chip repaired. It only cost $53 and is not noticable. Unfortunately, I also took a stone to the foglight and that cost $197 for the VW dealer to replace.

To be fair, I took a hit from a fair sized rock (1/2 the size of a golf ball)dropped from the back of a dump truck yesterday on the freeway while doing 100km/h.

While it "chipped" the screen, the damage was a 2-3mm diameter poofteenth thick chip on the surface, not a starchip.

Any other vehicles I have had which was hit like this (it has happened to me in 5 vehicles) has had a starchip which grew into a crack within days.

I was surprised (and relieved) to find that this wasn't the case with the Eos.

Windscreen issues are mostly caused by too many roadworks, grit/stones on the road and the aerodynamic design of modern cars. In older cars that were higher I noticed small stones and leaves coming towards the screen would fly over the top. On my EOS they hit the screen just below the rearview mirror mount.:(

I have noticed when the sun shines across the screen there is a larg amount of surface scratches I've not been aware of before.

Although I have screen insurance cover, sometimes I can't be bothered to call them out and I've fixed small stone chips myself. You have to do it early before heat and cold causes a crack. I use the ultra clear U.V curing epoxy which makes an invisible repair. I've not used the vacuum pull technique the pros use either. They say to leave the screen in sun to cure the adhesive. That's not always possible in Winter and I now have a U.V curing lamp which does the job in a couple of minutes - just like the dentist!
