has anyone else got the same problem as me..

my plastic has corroded on my wing mirrors, VW dealer say they've not heard of it before but I've seen a couple of EOS's parked up with the same problem.

Yes, my nearside one is corroding. Have never heard of plastic corroding so think it must be a metal part. My warranty runs out in a couple of months so I intend to see my Dealer about it shortly and hopefully get it replaced.

Just had both of mine replaced under warrenty. If I am right about it, it is not plastic but a painted magnesium casting which is at fault here and is a manufacturing defect at VW.

Not going to go too deeply into it but it would be something to do with the anti corrosion layer on the magnesium part.

Me too

One of mine was like it when i first bought it but the parts were on order before i collected it from the Dealer and they are replacing both on Friday this week as warranty so get it done while you can and re check them a month before your warranty expires in case they need doing again.

Yep, I have it on both... waiting for parts from VW, so far been 6 weeks on back order! Obviously quite common as they are out of parts!!

Sorry, mean to say magnesium-alloy diecast. Material is cheap as chips and stronger than an ali diecast. It the anti corrosion layer which is at fault anyway.

Booked the car in today, the parts are no longer on back-order (there are eight sets in the country), my dealer has done about 30 replacements, so it looks like a widespread problem.

While I was there I got them to stamp my service book for the two major services so far; somehow they had forgotten to do this at the time. They also did this with my Wife's Polo.

Overall I'm not over the moon with the dealer service I have received (the Polo went in 7 times for a loud "clonk" on the front suspension, which is still there despite many parts being changed under warranty).

My next car? Are AUDI any better, or do they just cost more? Had a look at an A3 Cabrio today- it looked very nice but is it just the same box of bits underneath? :(

Some Audis are basically rebodied VWs, yes. The A3 is essentially a Golf, so reliability should be broadly similar. Interior quality is even better. But you pay an awful lot more for having 4 rings on your badge instead of a VW roundel...
I think both VW and Audi take a lot of beating, but they never come out anywhere near top in reliability surveys..

I had both mirrors replaced a month or two ago under warranty. Just hope VW have improved them so they don't go again.

Can someone post a picture of what this corrosion looks like. I've never seen it (fortunately).

I've had mine replaced so I can't, but imagine an alloy wheel that has corroded and it looks the same. The paint comes off and the alloy goes all pitted and white.

Both mine are corroding - 2006 launch car - now out of warranty. It forms a 'white powdery' surface.

What I have done is 'click' the mirrors fully 'back' and 'forward' and slapped a load of Waxoil all over the all the 'white' bits. Don't know if it will help but I'll report back in a few weeks/months.

It would be very helpful if someone with this problem could take and post some photos to show us what it looks like. Does it affect the frame or does it affect the reflecting surface under the glass? I for one am not certain what type of corrosion is involved [I may be able to help if I can identify the type of corrosion].

Also is the problem associated with certain types of environment eg industrial regions, marine environments, regions where salt and de-icing compounds are used on roads, warm humid weather etc
