So the top is up daily now and this is the first "weathered" winter for the car. I purchased the car this past Feb, but it was brand new and didn't creak in the cold weather then.

I am due for my 20k oil change and service. I have not bought any Krytox as of yet. Is it cheaper to have the dealer lube the seals for me when they do the service, or should I bite the bullet and buy some Krytox and apply it myself twice a year?

I guess the bottom line question is how much will the dealer charge to lube the seals? Anyone know? I'm thinking depending on the price I'll just have it lubricated every 10k (twice a year for me).

thanks all.

Its such a simple task I do it myself, that way I know its done correctly. As for getting the dealer to do it I suspect they would take quite a bit of your cash to do it. Also you should note that some dealers are not that knowledgable about the correct lubricant to use. Another reason to do it yourself.

I've seen an article/bulletin/thread somewhere that suggested UK dealers are charging around £90 to lubricate the seals. I can't remember where I read it though, but for half an hours work, and 1/3rd of a £35 bottle of Krytox I've been doing it myself.

Good lord. OK, if I have to spend nearly $180 for an inept underpaid mechanic to do a (hopefully) decent job on a fairly new line of car that he has little experience on, then I guess the decision has already been made.

I know I read in a thread somewhere a dealer put silicon on an owner's car. I know that would really make me angry.

wishful optimistic thinking on my part... (what was I thinking??)

I just joined this forum. Our EOS is from september 07, 08 model.
Great car but indeed lots of 'creaks' from the roof, especially left side.
Dealer used some 'silicone' to solve the problem, but that only lasted for 2 weeks. I have been reading lots of comments on this forum and was wondering if there is any permanent solution to this. Before I drove a Boxster and that soft top was even more noisy. Anyhow, I like the car so much and it is such fun to drive that I find it a bit a shame that such a car is making such noises..........

I would look at using the VW special lubricant on the catches too, this will make sure they engage fully. Since I addressed my rattles, they come back from time to time, but most of the time it is quiet!

You first have to work out whether it is metal or plastic sounding creaks... It is possible that the main place for the creaks are the spring loaded supports/rests for the read windscreen (C-Segment).... I have also lubed the rubber guides that the bottom of the C segment rest on to ensure that the CS settles completely at the bottom.

just thought you all would like this... Atlanta, GA.

Me: I need an oil change and how much do you charge for small bottle of lKrytox ubricant for Eos roof seals?

Dealer: Kry - what?

Me: It may not be "Krytox" but you shold have a stock of approved seal lubricant for the top.

Dealer: Why don't you just use some silicone for a buck? Besides, I don't think we have such a thing

Me: Never mind.

Dealer: (raises eyebrow and gives me the suspicious look as I sit down in the waiting room) You're serious, aren't you? There is special seal lubricant?

Me: Please finish my oil change.

Me:

I expect the same thing will happen the world over. Certainly from my experience the dealers mechanics normally know the least, its the enthusiasts and ownners who tend to know better. Of course if you get a mechanic who owns an Eos you are on to a good thing.

If you want a job doing right do it yourself (if you can).

Only EOS trained mechanics will know about it at this time... Once they get more commonplace, then parts people and other techs will get to know about it... You can't trust them to just know. You have to explain and probably go at them with a part number... (G 052 172 A1)...

It is also worth bearing in mind that KRYTOX is a chemical brand which is an ingredient in the lubricant. I don't see how any VW tech would ever know it under that name!

There is also an aerosol one with a similar part number which ends in A2, but that it not for the seal lubrication/protection, it is for linkage lubrication of the roof components, although I do believe it is also krytox based (but with added PTFE).... It is more for allowing parts to slide against one another with the least friction.....

For the seals you need the little bottle of liquid. (G 052 172 A1)...

Thanks for the part numbers, Si.

I guess being optimistic is a stage for failure. There really is nothing better than good 'ol fashion quality customer service.

My wife took our car in for its first oil change, and the mechanic at first said it had a recall, then he said, well not really a recall, but they were supposed to treat the seals. So they did. We had a small leak at each A pillar. Water would drip run dow the pillar toward the front door/dash. Not much but enough to "really irrate' my wife. No idea what they put on it. But it was nice they decided "they" should do it.

well I thank you all for the info, seems like Krytox is the thing to use. Next stop at dealer I will go for Krytox. All the other problems you are all mentioning, I am luckily not experiencing. Hope it stays that way..........
Enjoy the ride............
