hi all,
I bought a 08 plate 2.0 tdi EOS about 2 months ago, and after trawling the internet, numerous calls to the dealer, and even VW UK direct Ive eventually found out that "apparently" my EOS only comes with 4 speakers!!!! Of which they're all in the front!! This explains why the sound is so bad tho I guess.

Anyway my question is, does anyone know if the wiring is in place for the rear speakers, reluctantly Im thinking Im going to have to install some speakers myself, but if it involves installing speaker wire all the way back to the head unit aswell I will probably grin and bare it.

Also if anybody has already replaced their rear speakers - do you have any tips/hints/advice you could give me?

Any words of knowledge on this "touchy" subject are appreciated - thanks

I have the same situation. I have an '08 FSI which, although the grilles are in the rear, there are no speakers.

As mine recently had a rear panel replaced by my dealer due to them damaging it, i can advise a little bit (i watched the guy do it)

There are no wires in place for the rear speakers on my model. Therefore i presume that they would have to be wired directly from the head unit. Also, the head unit knows that there are only two speakers, according to the tech guy my unit would have to be reprogrammed if i wanted to fit rear speakers (ie no fader control displayed)

Removing the rear panel does not look an easy job. The one thing he mentioned is that he had to disarm the "anti roll units" in the rear headrests before he removed the panel. Im not sure how he did it ( i know he took a cover off each headrest but not sure what he did inside)

To remove the panel and replace it took him an hour and a bit.

I think if you bought an Eos with the RCD 300/310 then you only get the 4 speakers in the front. When you get the RCD 500/510 then you get 6 speakers - 2 in the back.
The next upgrade is DynAudio which adds an extra 2 speakers in the back.

DynAudio has 10 speakers, 6 front 4 rear. In 07 here in the US we got 8 speakers with the RCD 500 option as the first level radio upgrade. You had to have the the RCD 500 or the nav model to get the DynAudio. I find it odd they would install grilles and no speaker. I can see no wires to the rear as a cost cutter.

VW normally leave the wiring out on their other models if you do not go for the 8 speaker option when new - the same is certainly true of the EOS. When mine was ordered it was an extra option to have the 8 speakers (and another one for DynAudio).

Quickest way to tell if wiring is present, is to remove the stereo and look at the connections on the Quadlock connector - if you have 2 thick twisted pairs then only front speakers wiring is present, 4 thick twisted pairs and the rear speaker wiring is fitted already. The stereo has a label on top to show speaker locations on the Quadlock connector. There will also be one thin twisted pair which is the CAN bus connection.

Ha, good thinking justcarkits, I didnt think of that, will check at the weekend an report back.
Looks like Ive got a project on for the summer tho, Ive ordered the EOS maintnance cd off ebay so I can take the panels off, an also the 'trim removal tool kit' to help me along....
I still thinking its shocking that VW can make a car with no rear speakers this day in age, I expected better of them, I think a letter to the Head office is also on the cards

Thanks for the advice tho all....
