My technique for manually opening sunroof ( when using 4mm hex key won't work )

A quick update to my other post asking how to manually open the sunroof

Basically I read that you need to use a 4mm hex key to push up on the motor spindle + then turn ....this wouldn't work on mine , the spindle key point is too flimsy + rounded off ( and yes I used a long four millimeter key and could feel that the nylon drive gear had disconnected from the worm drive ( after I pushed upwards as much as possible ) but I could not apply enough torque.... as the spindle key point just rounded off )

So , I removed the 4mm spindle + connected it to my drill

Then used the drill to insert the spindle to the sunroof motor + spin it

Ps; there is a pointy washer on the underside of one of the plastic cover/ moulding bolt entrance points, I don't what this for , perhaps to isolate the cover from the metal bracket which has some sharpish edges?

For anyone manually opening closing the roof don't forget to recalibrate the motor afterwards.... I did forget the first time I did this and damaged the teeth on the new nylon gear..... So have another gear on order and hopefully the recalibration will work

I suspect the reason for my original nylon gear damage was due to a battery change I had done recently, I have read that loss of power to the sunroof motor makes it lose its calibration ( not exactly the best design is it? Nearly all electrical items these days remember their settings after power off from the mains .....no doubt another VW money making scam .....unless anyone has a logical explanation as to why the motor does not keep its settings / or does it? Who knows , a lot of conflicting info out there )

True , but there's no excuse for a memory sensitive device, that's costs ÂŁ500+ , to not have a memory storage circuit ...

Unless of course it's a money making scam by VW....

And make no mistake, things like this are deliberate, and designed so that you have to take your car to the VW stealer , so they can steal....

They are only happy when they are stealing, they're not interested in offering you a product that has reliable and long life span.....
